Teaching difficulties:
How to read complex numbers, and understand immediately after listen to them
 
一.  Lead-in
1. Ask students: How many students are there in our classroom/school?
2. Show them a map of China, which has the population of each province. And ask them:
  What’s the population of Beijing/Hebei/Sichuan…?
  If they can’t answer them correctly, let them discuss with partners first.
 
二.  Numbers
1.Let Ss revise 100; 1000; 10,000; 100,000; 1,000,000; 1000,000,000;
  Tell the difference between Chinese and English
  Give a set of numbers from part 2 on Page 61, let them listen and read after the tape.
  Do Exercise 1 on Page 163, read those numbers.
 
2.Give them some mathematical problems such as:
248+659; 3,965+7,284; 126,704+12… …
Get Ss to work in pairs, and try to work out the answers and read the answers aloud.
3.Turn back to the map. Now let Ss ask each other questions again according to the map: What’s the population of Beijing/Liaoning….?
 
三.   “Standing Room only”
1.      1)Give them questions on the screen:
Question 1: How many babies are born in one minute and in one hour?
Question 2: How many new babies do people have to feed in one day?
Question 3: How large will the world’s population be by the year 2010?
   2)Listen to the tape, ask them to pay attention to the numbers they’ll listen to.
Check the answers, and have them listen to the tape again and this time repeat.
2.  1)Turn to page 62, have them go through the text “Standing room only” quickly
Ask Ss: What do you think is the most greatest challenge of the world today?
    How is the world’s population growing?
    When was the population over 6 billion?
    What will happen in about 600 years?
    What should we do to slow down the population increase?
Several Ss tell their answers in front of class.
    2) Go through several phrases
3.  Discussion
1) Presentation: As everyone knows, population is still a big problem in China and the world. Population increase may cause many problems.
Ask: Do you think China’s population is too big? What about the world’s?
How to deal with the problems?
Let them discuss in groups, and choose some groups to show their opinions.
Tell them that they can start with problems of the lack of natural resources, the housing, unemployment, pollution, etc.
4.        Write
Finish part 2 on Page 64.
 
四.  Discuss about cars
1.Show some pictures of different types of cars, from small economy cars to large luxurious cars, and each one with a number.
Ask Ss to a car with a price beside it  he would like to buy.
Ask: Which car would you like to buy? Why?
How much do you think that car would cost?
2.      In small groups, have them discuss which car they would buy and why. Ask several to share their answers with the class.
Have the class guess how much each car costs.
3.      1) Skim in the dialogue for the main idea. Let them guess the meaning of new words and expressions.
2) Talk about the prices of cars that they are interested in, and make a dialogue by themselves.
 
五.  Future-in-the-past tense
1.1)Teacher ask one student:
What are you going to do today?
S1: I’m going to see a film.
Teacher: What did he say just now?
S2: He said he was going to see a film.
. 2)Let Ss practise dialogues like this in groups.
 
2.Revise simple future tense in object clause
  1)Give some sentences like:
I don’t know what will happen.
  I’m not sure whether he will buy another car… …
  2)Let Ss give more examples.
3.1)Put all those sentences into past tense:
  I didn’t know…
  I wasn’t sure… …
  2)Let Ss finish the sentences. Tell them how to use Future-in-the-past tense in object clause
4.Give them a paragraph with blanks. Let Ss fill in the blanks with the attention of Future-in-the-past tense in the object clause.
5.Practise the sentences of part 2 on Page 63. Make sentences as many as they could.
 
六.  Read
1.      Play the tape for Ss to listen to and answer the question:
Which countries did Sam want to start with and end with on his travels?
Check the answer.
2. Work in groups. Discuss about the original plan on Page 65 and try to find a better plan for Sam.
 
七.Homework
1. Write down the plan.
2. After class, Ss can collect more information about problems caused by population increase. They may write down a proposal that introduces how the population is increasing and what happens or will happen.
3. As most of the students know about China’s one-child policy, have them write what they think about the policy. Tell why or why not.
